Job Purpose:
The Senior Counter-Wildlife Trafficking Officer supports the protection of tigers, elephants, and other wildlife in the Endau-Rompin Landscape by leading the management and analysis of patrol, threat, and surveillance data. He/She strengthens counter wildlife trafficking efforts through database oversight, analytical reporting, and coordination of anti-poaching patrols. The role also enhances team capacity by conducting trainings and producing key documentation to guide effective conservation and enforcement strategies.
Major responsibilities:
• Manage all Endau-Rompin Landscape’s patrol and threat data using the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) database, camera trap database, and other relevant databases in a timely manner.
• Ensure SMART databases, surveillance camera trap databases and other relevant databases are audited and improved through continuous maintenance and development of protocols.
• Conduct and/or assist in vigilance analysis, problem analysis, threat assessments and other relevant analysis to produce reports in order to guide and recommend conservation and protection strategies for tigers, elephants, and other wildlife in the landscape.
• Conduct and assist in counter-wildlife trafficking (CWT)-related trainings, workshops, and meetings for WCS Malaysia staff, partners (e.g., government agencies), and other relevant agencies where applicable.
• Assist in the planning and management of anti-poaching patrols, field staffs, preparation of field equipment and rations.
• Work closely with other team members such as the Research & Monitoring and Community team to collate wildlife crime information.
• Attend CWT and other relevant trainings, workshops, and meetings when required.
• Assist supervisors in producing relevant documentation (e.g., analytical reports, project reports, resource materials, training reports, publications) according to project activities.
• Lead and/or participate in CWT field work when needed.
• Ensure monthly financial claims for the team are compiled and submitted on time for processing by Finance of WC&S Malaysia.
• Assist assistant coordinator and coordinator of the CWT in the preparation of monthly finances and procurement of WC&S Malaysia’s assets.
• To familiarize with the WC&S Malaysia’s processes and policies.
• To perform other duties as may be required by your supervisor, CWT Coordinator, Landscape Manager, and/or Country Director.
Minimum requirements and job skills:
• Degree in biological sciences (forestry, zoology, ecology, biodiversity), social sciences, criminology or equivalent.
• Three-year working experience in related field is preferable.
• Passion and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation.
• Has discipline to work independently and can work as a team.
• Willing to travel to rural areas for extended periods.
• Independent with ability to prioritize, work under pressure and under minimum supervision.
• Meticulous with a keen eye for details.
• The ability to drive a manual transmission 4x4 vehicle or ride a motorcycle will be a plus.
• Having knowledge or experience in using R Statistical software, QGIS / ARCGIS, SMART and statistics software is a plus.
• Able to work during weekends or public holidays or when required.
• Good communication skills.
• Proficient in English and Bahasa Malaysia; ability to communicate in other languages is a plus.
